Summary
When selling or giving the iPhone we are using to others, we may worry about the personal data in the iPhone of being recovered. To solve this problem, we can factory reset iPhone to wipe or erase all data entirely from iPhone. Here, we are going to introduce about how to erase iPhone data without trace.

Part 1: Backup Data before Erasing iPhone

Before erasing iPhone, please create the latest backup version of your data inside the device which can help you restore data.

1. iCloud

To backup data with iCloud, users just need to do is to connect the device with WiFi without connecting device to PC.

Step 1: Connect you device to WiFi (Charge your iPhone if the power is not enough).

Step 2: Go to [Settings] > [Apple ID] in iPhone. Please login your Apple ID if you have not login.

Step 3: Click [iCloud].

Step 4: Select the data you want to backup in iCloud.

Step 5: Scroll down, find and click [iCloud Backup] and then click Back Up Now.

The backup will take some time to process. You can use your iPhone as usual when backup processing.

After backup finished, iCloud will save a new backup which can be restore in any other iPhone.

Attention: Please log out your iCloud account before selling or giving the iPhone to others. This can prevent others from recovering data from the device.

2. Local Backup

Since iCloud just provides storage upto 2TB which could be not enough for data backup, users can draw support from iTunes in PC.

1. Open iTunes and connect iPhone to computer with USB cable.

2. Go to iPhone in iTunes. Click [This computer] then [Back Up Now].

3. Select to backup the Apps or not in the pop up window.

4. Check the backup after finished.

1. Download and install Renee iPassFix and then open it.Connect your iPhone to computer with cable. Click [Fix Device]

2. Factory Reset Function in iPhone

Of course, there is other methods of erasing iPhone data. Here we take factory reset function in iPhone as an example.

Find [General] in [Settings]. Then please get access to [Reset] and [Erase All Content and Settings]. Enter the passcode of the device to process the reset.

Attention: If you do not want to use the device anymore, please select [Erase All Content and Settings]. If you just want to reset the settings of iPhone, please click [Reset All Settings].

3. iTunes

If you forgot the passcode of your iPhone, you can not reset the iPhone with method above. Here, we can restore iPhone to factory status with iTunes. However, before processing the reset, iPhone should be access to recovery mode.

1. Download and install the latest iTunes. If you have opened the software, please exit.

2. Keep iPhone connected. Then follow steps here untill you get into the recovery mode：

● iPhone models with Face ID: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Power button until your device begins to restart. Continue holding the Power button until your device goes into recovery mode.

● iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the recovery mode screen.

● iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Top (or Side) and Volume Down buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen.

● iPhone 6s or earlier iPhone with Home button: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen.

You will see this screen once iPhone get into recovery mode:

3. Click [Restore] in the pop up window to factory reset iPhone and erase data inside.

4. Remote Reset

If you do not have the target iPhone, you can also reset iPhone with Find my iPhone function. To use this function, the Find My iPhone function must be enabled in the device.

1. Turn on your computer and go to iCloud.com in your browser. Then enter your Apple ID and password.

2. Select the target device in the list after clicking [All Devices] in “Find my iPhone”.

3. Click [Erase iPhone].

5. Fill iPhone Storage

If you still worry about others will recover your data from the iPhone which has been reset, you can try to fill iPhone with multiple useless videos or files until the storage is full. Then reset the iPhone with methods above.
