Reason 1: Lack of System Boot File in BCD

Disk writes error, power outages, boot sector viruses and the errors caused by configuring the BCD manually could lead to corrupted or missing BCD.

Reason 2: System Clone Failure

If you clone disk with disk clone software which is deficient, related boot information could be process incorrectly. As a result, error happens when we boot the PC.

This error happens when we boot the PC, so we can not get access to Windows safe mode to solve this problem. And most parts of the solutions provided below need to be processed with the recovery environment in Windows installation media.

Solution 1: Process the Automatic Repair

Enabling the Automatic Repair is the easiest way to solve many errors.
Step 1: Turn on the computer and press the power button to shutdown the computer compulsively when we see a rolling circle.

Step 2: Repeat step 1 for 2-3 times until you get access to “Choose an option” interface. Please click “Troubleshoot”.

Step 3: Select “Advanced options” then “Startup Repair”. Please process the automatic repair by following the steps on screen.

After repair finish, please restart the computer to check whether the error has been solved. If not, please refer to solution 2.

Solution 2: Rebuilt BCD Manually

Startup error 0xc0000098 could be caused by the empty BCD file. Rebuild it could solve this problem.
Step 1: Connect the Windows installation media (DVD/USB) to the target PC. Please read the page about how to create a Windows installation media.

Step 2: Change the boot order in BIOS setup. If you use a bootable USB drive, please put “Removable Devices” as the first boot choice.

Step 3: After you boot from the bootable CD/DVD/USB, click “Repair your computer”.

Step 4: Select “Troubleshoot”> “Advanced Options”> “Command Prompt”.

Step 5: In the command prompt, type “bootrec /rebuildbcd”. Please press “Enter” to process the command.

If it can find Windows and ask to add it to boot list, please press “Y”. Then the operation will be processed automatically and the cursor will blink. If computer still can not boot normally, please try method 3.

Solution 3: Check the Disk with CHKDSK

If the integrity of files in hard disk driver boot sector gets damage, we can repair it with Windows built-in tools CHKDSK to scan the disk and fix the file system error.
Step 1: Connect the Windows installation media (DVD/USB) to the target PC. Please read the page abouthow to create a Windows installation media.

Step 5: In the command prompt, type “chkdsk d: /f”. Then press “Enter” to process the command.

Please change “d” to related drive letter accordingly.

Open Device management. Then right click “Computer” and you can find the drive letters for all partitions.

Solution 4: Factory Reset Windows System

Sometimes, we can reset the system with advance option when we encounter computer boot up failure. Here, we can active the Advanced option by making use of Windows auto detection function.

However, factory reset the system will delete all personal data and software. It is recommended to transfer all important inside the disk before we process the system reset. Please try data transfer funtion in Renee PassNow.

How to Transfer Data with Renee Passnow

Step 1: Download and install Renee Passnow on any other workable computer.

Step 3: Boot the target computer with the created bootable media.

Step 4: After loading into the main interface of Renee Passnow, please select “Data Transfer” function.

Step 5: Select the original disk and target disk. And drag the target files to the target disk directly.

Please follow steps below to reset Windows:

Step 1: Turn on the computer and press the power button to shutdown the computer compulsively when we see a rolling circle.

Step 6: Enter the user name and the password. Click “Continue”. If you do not set the password, please leave it empty.
